Here are the answers to a few common questions we get about biodegradable cups…
Are biodegradable cups recyclable and/or compostable?
As the name states, biodegradable coffee cups will degrade under the right conditions, however they are not suitable for home composting and shouldn’t be recycled.
Here’s why..
Biodegradable cups must be degraded in a controlled environment. Meaning it can’t be done in the garden or at landfill. They also take much longer to degrade than compostable materials such as weeds or grass.
These cups should also not be put in the recycling. That’s because they would become a contaminant if done so.
Therefore, it’s very important to know whether you are using biodegradable, compostable or recyclable products. And even taking the time to pass that message onto your customers.
Why are biodegradable cups good for the environment?
When comparing to conventional plastics to biodegradable materials, the conventional plastic takes hundreds of years to break down and in the worst case – may never break down.
It’s said that non degradable materials are having a highly negative impact on our environment. Consumers have also become much more aware of the impact and are increasingly opting to purchase goods that are much more beneficial to the environment.
