The History Of The Moccamaster

The Moccamaster range is manufactured by Techniform and has been produced in the heart of the Netherlands in the small, picturesque town of Amerongen since 1968. The Moccamaster is considered to be the market leader in brewing, product design and sustainability.

Certifications:

ECBC: The Moccamaster is certified by the European Coffee Brewing Centre (ECBC) test coffee equipment for the quality of the machine itself and the coffee it produces. Brew time, temperature and rate of extraction are all important. All Moccamaster devices have been carrying the ECBC quality mark since 1975.

SCA: The Specialty Coffee Association ensures the quality of the global coffee community. All Moccamaster machines bear the SCA quality mark.

How Does The Moccamaster Work?

The copper heating element is unique and ensures a stable and optimal brewing temperature between 92 and 96 degrees. Why is this temperature optimal? When coffee is brewed too cold, it can taste sour and acidic, this is because it is under extracted. If the coffee is made too hot, it tasted bitter and over extracted.

At first, preparing filter coffee may seem like complicated, multi stage process with lots of cleaning at the end. Or just generally, a lot more work compared to other brew methods. However, this isn’t strictly the case, brewing that perfect cup of coffee is probably far easier than you may have originally thought. Filter coffee is similar to baking a cake or cooking your favourite recipe, when you put in the extra love and attention to detail, you can taste it straight away.

To make your filter coffee you essentially need: a filter paper, water (filtered is best) and ground coffee / coffee beans. Then you turn the Moccamaster on and wait for it to work its magic.

Once you turn on the Moccamaster, it will take approximately 30 seconds for the water to heat up. You’ll see it go up through the glass tube and into the outlet arm, it’ll then start to pour out over the coffee. Depending on how much you’re brewing, this will take between 4 and 6 minutes.

You will need:

  • 60g coffee beans
  • Moccamaster Machine
  • Filter paper
  • 1 litre of filtered water
  • Scales
  • Spoon
  • Weigh out your beans and grind them to a medium – coarse filter setting (Similar to Cafetière grind)
  • Rinse the filter paper (This removes the papery taste) and place it into the holder. Pour the coffee in and tap the sides to create a flat coffee bed.
  • Pour 1 litre of filtered water (cold or room temperature) into the reservoir and turn the machine on.
  • When the water reaches temperature, it will start to pour onto the coffee bed.
  • After about 30 – 45 seconds, gently stir the coffee with the end of a spoon and ensure all of the coffee is saturated.
  • After a couple of minutes (Or about 2/3 of the way through extraction) give the coffee another gentle stir to flatten the bed again.
  • Allow all the remaining water to come through. Note: If the coffee tastes sour and acidic, it is under extracted, dry grinding your beans a little finer. This will stop the water flowing through it as quickly. If the coffee tastes bitter it is over extracted, grind your coffee slightly coarser which will speed up the rate of extraction.

Tip: We recommend that if you want to keep your coffee hot for a longer period of time, pour straight into an insulated carafe or decant into a preheated one. Whilst the hot plate is useful, it can overheat the coffee and create a bitter taste, compromising the natural sweetness.

Why Is the Moccamaster KBG ‘Sustainable’ ?

This reliable coffee machine is made from recyclable and high quality materials. The Moccamaster benefits from a modular design, the individual parts are easy to repair and replace. It’s energy efficient (the copper heating element and hot plate automatically turn off after 40 minutes) and if looked after, has a lifespan of up to 20 years.

Once produced, each Moccamaster is tested twice before it is signed off, further assurance that the Moccamaster is ‘built to last’

It’s also:

  • Made from sustainable and recyclable materials
  • BPA Free. BPA is a chemical used to make plastics, such as food container, drinks bottles and protective coatings. Although there’s conflicting evidence about the dangers of BPA, most manufacturers and consumers are omitting it from their products.
  • Phthalate free. Phthalates are ‘plasticisers’, they make plastics more flexible. Like BPA, there’s health concerns regarding prolonged exposure. Manufacturers are urged to stay away from them when possible.

Moccamaster KBG Select Accessories And Spare Parts

Moccamaster Coffee Filters

Suitable for the KB, KBG, KBGT and CDGT models. There’s 100 papers pack and they are oxygen bleached (this process is considered to be better for the environment)
Note: Before use, fold along the edge to ensure the paper fits in the filter cone properly. Always wet the filter paper beforehand, this gets rid of the papery taste and also stops the filter from absorbing the coffee oils from the initial stages of the extraction.

Moccamaster Glass Jug Suitable for the KBG and CD10 models, with a 1.25 litre capacity.
Note: Whilst the jug is dishwasher safe, Moccamaster recommend washing it by hand to ensure it has a longer lifespan.
