What is Spiced Chai tea and what are the benefits?
Put simply, it is a robust blend of spices, herbs and tea.
Ours is available to buy in both retail size packs of 125g or large packs of 1KG – the large packs are often bought for use by coffee shops, cafes or restaurants.
What spices are in a chai latte?
Chai contains strong spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, ginger and nutmeg. It also contains a hint of black tea leaves.
If you want to make your own at home, then you could try adding black peppercorns or nutmeg.
In the early days, possibly as far back as 5,000 years ago in India, it was a simple mix of ginger and black peppercorns and was used in medicinal practice for healing purposes.
As the drink grew in popularity, it started to be made using a much wider variety of herbs and spices.
Does spiced chai tea contain caffeine?
It does have some levels of caffeine but not as much as coffee. The caffeine comes from the black tea leaves that are mixed with the spices.
What are the benefits of drinking Chai Tea
There are some health benefits said to be associated with regular consumption of these spices.
That’s because they contain powerful antioxidants, anti-inflammatory properties and antibacterial microorganisms.
Some health benefits might include stimulating digestion as well as protecting overall cell health.
But that’s not all.
The caffeine levels can also help to wake you up ready for your day ahead – some might say – to be more proactive.
Chai Recipes & How to make
How to make spiced chai tea
You should prepare it in the same way as other loose leaf teas.
For example, you might decide to use a teapot with infuser to brew the spices or use a Tea Infuser spoon. Both will work
If you want to make it yourself from scratch, there are lots of recipes available online.
Alternatively, if you want consistency, then it’s a good idea to buy ours first, then add some flavouring yourself.
Making spiced chai tea with syrup
You can add a flavoured syrup to take the sharpness out of the spices somewhat.
We offer lots of flavoured syrups that are available to buy via our website.
Vanilla flavoured syrup is a very popular addition to the drink because it offers complementary flavouring to the spices.
Alternatively, it’s also been known to be mixed with a pumpkin flavour syrup, which will provide a more intense feel to the drink and is often consumed during the autumn and winter months.
How to store Chai
Always store in a cool, dark, dry place – never put it in the fridge.
It will last much longer when stored in an airtight container and away from other spices – that can often spread unwanted smells and flavour.
It’s also a good idea to keep it away from coffee, which also has strong flavours that could be passed across into the blend.
